Lviv, Ukraine — The former speaker of Ukraine’s parliament, Andriy Parubiy, was shot and killed on a street in Lviv, sparking a nationwide investigation and manhunt for the assailant, authorities announced. Parubiy, 54, was known for his significant role during Ukraine’s 2014 Euromaidan protests and was an influential figure in efforts toward Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
The incident reportedly took place as Parubiy was approached by an individual disguised as a courier, who allegedly drew a weapon and fired multiple rounds before fleeing the scene. Eyewitness videos circulating on social media appear to corroborate these details. In the wake of the shooting, President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the act, describing it as a “horrific murder” and extending condolences to Parubiy’s family.
In response to the attack, Ukrainian authorities initiated a specialized operation known as “Siren” to locate and apprehend the shooter. President Zelensky assured the public that all available resources are being directed toward the investigation. Reports indicate that prosecutors confirmed that Parubiy died immediately from gunfire inflicted by an unidentified shooter.
Law enforcement found seven shell casings at the shooting scene, suggesting a calculated attack rather than a random act of violence. Sources close to the investigation noted that the gunman appeared to have disguised himself as a delivery driver, carrying a yellow delivery bag typically used by the courier company Glovo. The attacker was also seen using an electric bike to escape.
Glovo has publicly expressed shock at the brutal crime and pledged full cooperation with investigators as they seek to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Parubiy was a pivotal figure during the Euromaidan movement, which played a significant role in the ousting of former President Viktor Yanukovych, whose government had leaned toward Russia. He led efforts to organize protestor “self-defense” teams, risking his life during clashes with law enforcement while advocating for closer ties with the European Union.
After Yanukovych’s ouster, Parubiy served as the Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, navigating a crucial period marked by Russian aggression in Crimea and eastern Ukraine. Following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia in early 2022, he took up arms with the territorial defense forces, underlining his commitment to the nation’s security.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described Parubiy as a patriot and statesman whose contributions to Ukraine’s fight for independence were invaluable. “He rightfully belongs in the history books,” Sybiha stated, highlighting Parubiy’s legacy in shaping modern Ukraine.
Former President Petro Poroshenko echoed these sentiments, referring to Parubiy as a great man and a true friend. He lamented his death as “a shot fired at the heart of Ukraine,” reflecting the substantial role Parubiy played in fortifying the Ukrainian military and government.
As investigations continue, the nation grieves the loss of one of its leading figures during a time of ongoing conflict and political turmoil. The killing underscores the heightened tensions in Ukraine amidst the war and the risks faced by those standing for national sovereignty.
