Murder: Man Sentenced to Life Plus 15 Years for the Brutal Killing of Girlfriend in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Shelby County man has been sentenced to life in prison, plus an additional 15 years, for the brutal murder of his girlfriend last year. Nocomus Harris, found guilty of first-degree murder and evidence tampering, received his sentence on Monday after a jury reached a verdict in April.

According to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, Harris was convicted in connection with the death of Carlotta Wilson, with whom he shared a close relationship. The court determined that Harris committed the crime in April 2022, when he fatally attacked Wilson in her Parkway Village apartment. Investigators reported that she sustained severe injuries, including having her throat slashed and a belt left wrapped around her neck, leading to a harrowing crime scene.

The Assistant District Attorney, Alyssa Henning, argued for the maximum sentence, which was accepted by the presiding judge. The harsh penalty reflects the severe nature of the crime and its impact on the victim’s family. The life sentence pertains to the murder conviction, while the additional 15 years was imposed for tampering with evidence.

At the time of her death, Wilson was babysitting a one-year-old child, who was fortunately unharmed during the incident. Harris fled the scene afterward, abandoning Wilson’s vehicle on a remote gravel road near the Tennessee-Missouri border after discarding her phone during his escape, according to officials.

Wilson’s brother discovered her lifeless body and promptly contacted emergency services, leading to the investigation that ultimately resulted in Harris’s arrest. Sources indicate the trauma inflicted on Wilson’s family is profound, leaving them to grapple with the aftermath of such a violent crime.

The case has highlighted the ongoing issues of domestic violence and the devastating consequences it can have on families and communities. Advocacy groups point to the need for increased awareness and resources to address these tragic situations and prevent further occurrences. Harris’s conviction serves as a reminder of the importance of taking decisive action against such heinous acts.
