Murder: Edmonton Nightclub Shooter Sentenced to Life for Attempted Massacre that Killed One and Injured Seven

Edmonton, Canada – A 28-year-old man has been convicted of first-degree murder in connection with a mass shooting that occurred outside an Edmonton nightclub, claiming the life of one individual and injuring several others. The incident took place in the early hours of March 12, 2022, as patrons were gathered outside the Ertale Lounge in what turned into a scene of chaos and violence.

Justice Eric Macklin, presiding over the case in the Court of King’s Bench, emphasized the sheer good fortune that prevented additional casualties during the shooting, which saw seven individuals wounded amidst a barrage of gunfire. Evidence presented during the trial indicated that Samatar Mohiadin was the first among four assailants to discharge his weapon, unleashing a hail of bullets outside the club around 2:45 a.m.

Mohiadin received a life sentence without possibility of parole for 25 years. During the sentencing, Macklin described the event as a “planned and deliberate assault,” noting that it was an “attempted massacre” directed at unarmed and unsuspecting guests.

One victim, identified as Imbert George, also known as Mario, was fatally struck four times, including a deadly shot to the head. At the time, he was departing the lounge after celebrating a birthday with friends and family.

Following the sentencing, George’s wife, Cassandra Matthias, expressed relief at the trial’s outcome. She highlighted the misconceptions surrounding her husband’s character, emphasizing that he was not involved in gangs and was not the intended target. Matthias described her late husband as a devoted stepfather and a lifelong learner, who had recently completed his master’s degree but never had the opportunity to celebrate his graduation.

The evidence in the case relied heavily on video footage that captured the moment of the shooting, which showed patrons rushing for safety as bullets flew. Testimonies revealed that Mohiadin discharged at least 16 of the 66 rounds identified by law enforcement at the crime scene. The judge noted that the defendants had intentionally planned the attack, with evidence indicating they surveilled the nightclub prior to the assault.

In the ensuing days, police apprehended three men after the getaway vehicle used in the shooting was stopped. However, Mohiadin managed to evade capture until December 2023, when he was eventually arrested in Winnipeg. As part of the trial, he was also found guilty on multiple counts related to aggravated assault and firearms violations, with sentences running concurrently to his life sentence.

Victim impact statements shared during court proceedings illustrated the emotional and physical aftermath faced by those injured in the shooting. Many described an enduring sense of fear and unease when out in public spaces, years after the event.

Matthias acknowledged the relief of having one assailant brought to justice but admitted to her ongoing struggle with fear stemming from the incident. “Every day I look behind my back,” she expressed, reflecting on the lasting impact of the shooting on her life.

As this case unfolds, additional legal actions are anticipated against the other alleged shooters. The community remains on edge, grappling with the realities of violence in public spaces.
