Vancouver, Washington – A man from Yakima, Washington, was convicted of murder for his involvement in the accidental shooting death of a police officer by a sheriff’s deputy. Julio Segura was found guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle, and eluding police in connection with Vancouver police officer Donald Sahota’s death.
The incident occurred on January 29, 2022, when Segura, after robbing a gas station near Vancouver, led deputies on a chase that ended in Battle Ground. Segura attempted to seek refuge at the Sahota home, where he engaged in a confrontation with Officer Sahota, who was off duty at the time. The situation escalated, resulting in Sahota being fatally shot by the responding deputy.
During the trial, prosecutors presented drone video evidence showing Segura interacting with someone at the Sahota home before the fatal altercation. Segura claimed self-defense in his actions, stating that he was cornered and acted out of necessity. However, the jury’s verdict found him responsible for Sahota’s death.
The defense argued that the responding deputy acted recklessly by opening fire on the scene, resulting in Sahota’s death. They emphasized the need for law enforcement to receive more extensive training to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Following the conviction, sentencing for Segura is scheduled for June 27. The Vancouver Police Chief expressed gratitude for the verdict but acknowledged the ongoing pain and loss experienced by Sahota’s loved ones. The officer’s tragic death serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face in the line of duty.
