AUSTIN, Texas – In a tragic turn of events, a woman has been charged with murder in connection to the death of her cousin in South Austin last year. Irean Demuchest, 34, is currently held in Travis County Jail after allegedly shooting her cousin at an apartment complex in a case that initially appeared to be a suicide attempt.
The incident took place on June 21, 2024, when neighbors reported hearing a disturbance in an apartment on South 1st Street. Upon arriving at the scene, authorities found 31-year-old Samantha Demuchest with a gunshot wound, her cousin alleging it was a self-inflicted injury. However, further investigation revealed that the shooting was intentional, leading to Irean Demuchest’s arrest for aggravated assault: family violence with serious bodily injury.
Samantha Demuchest fought for her life for five months as a paraplegic before succumbing to her injuries in November 2024. An autopsy confirmed that her death was a result of the gunshot wound she sustained. Police have now classified her death as a homicide.
In light of these developments, law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information about the case to come forward. The Capital Area Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for valuable tips. Individuals can contact the authorities anonymously at 512-472-8477 or reach out to the Austin Police Department at 512-974-TIPS.
Meanwhile, Irean Demuchest remains in custody, facing multiple charges with a combined bond set at $300,000. The community is left grappling with the tragedy that has unfolded, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding Samantha Demuchest’s untimely death and the impact it has had on those involved.
