EAST PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — A 46-year-old man has been charged with murder following a violent incident that took place in front of a child, as announced by Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney. The alleged crime occurred in May when Darrell Trent of Bellport was accused of fatally assaulting Carlos Bonaparte, 45, during a confrontation outside Bonaparte’s home.
Tierney emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that the attack took place in view of Bonaparte’s young daughter. “Violence like this has no place in our society,” he stated. “We are committed to ensuring the defendant faces appropriate consequences for his actions, as the victim and his family deserve justice.”
The incident unfolded on the early morning of May 18. According to the investigation, Bonaparte was outside with his daughter when his girlfriend arrived with two relatives, leading to a verbal dispute between Bonaparte and one of these individuals. Reports indicate that this relative called for Trent to intervene shortly after the argument began.
Trent allegedly arrived shortly thereafter with a crowbar, which he used in a brutal attack that ended Bonaparte’s life. Eyewitnesses, including the child, reportedly observed the incident unfold. The attack was said to be particularly vicious, with investigators stating that the crowbar penetrated Bonaparte’s skull, resulting in fatal injuries.
Emergency responders transported Bonaparte to Long Island Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Following the alleged assault, Trent reportedly fled the state but was apprehended in Shaker Heights, Ohio, on May 23.
On June 9, Trent faced arraignment in front of Acting County Court Justice James McDonaugh, who charged him with second-degree murder, a Class A felony. He was ordered to remain in custody without bail while the legal process unfolds, with his next court date scheduled for July 2.
Trent’s legal representation, attorney Matthew Touhey, indicated that the case involves complex elements that require thorough examination. “This case has many moving parts,” Touhey remarked, noting that they are actively reviewing details and potential defense strategies. He affirmed that Trent continues to assert his innocence regarding the charges.
