Trussville, Alabama — A 24-year-old man has been charged with murder following the shooting death of a 32-year-old father outside a local karaoke bar early Saturday morning. Kanen Isaac Harper, a Moody resident, faces charges in the death of Christian White, a Clay native, during a chaotic incident that erupted between the two men.
The incident unfolded shortly after 1 a.m. outside Velma’s Trussville, where a themed karaoke event was underway. According to police, a fight broke out between the accused and the victim, resulting in White sustaining fatal injuries. Authorities responded swiftly to reports of gunfire and found White at the scene, where he was later pronounced dead by emergency medical personnel.
White’s family, who described him as a devoted son, father, and friend, have initiated a fundraising campaign to assist with funeral costs. In their tribute, they emphasized his protective nature and the deep connection he had with his loved ones.
Trussville police established that at least one of the individuals had been inside Velma’s during the event. However, the establishment clarified that the incident was isolated and did not occur on its property. In a statement released by Velma’s attorney, it was confirmed that there was no confrontation inside the venue or on its immediate premises during the festivities.
Authorities are conducting an investigation to gather additional details about the circumstances leading to the shooting. It has been reported that a security guard was on duty, and surveillance footage from the establishment is being reviewed in cooperation with the police. The footage is expected to provide crucial insights into the events that transpired.
Following the incident, the mayor of Trussville expressed his sorrow over the loss in the community. Ben Short reflected on the profound impact of such a tragedy, underscoring that violence extends its reach beyond the immediate victim and affects countless lives connected to them. He extended prayers to the grieving families and recognition to the first responders handling the incident.
Harper was taken into custody over the weekend and is awaiting booking at the Jefferson County Jail. As the investigation continues, the community remains on alert while mourning the loss of a life and grappling with the ramifications of the violence that has shaken their town.
