HOUSTON — A 42-year-old man has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of an 11-year-old boy who reportedly rang his doorbell as part of a prank. Authorities identified the suspect as Gonzalo Leon Jr., who was taken into custody Wednesday in Harris County.
The incident occurred Sunday when the boy, Julian Guzman, participated in a game commonly referred to as “ding dong ditch,” where children ring doorbells and flee before the homeowner can answer. Police say Guzman was shot in the back as he ran away from Leon’s home and succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Witnesses reported hearing gunfire from the suspect’s direction after the doorbell was rung. “Our witness says the suspect came out of the door, ran into the street, and began firing down the road,” said Houston Police Sgt. Michael Cass. He indicated that the circumstances did not appear to warrant a self-defense claim. “It wasn’t close to the house,” he added.
