KURSK, Russia — Two men tragically lost their lives after stepping on a landmine in a field near the village of Popovka, which is situated approximately 25 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The incident, reported Tuesday by regional authorities, highlights ongoing dangers in an area heavily impacted by conflict.
Regional Governor Alexander Khinshtein identified the deceased as men aged 38 and 28 but did not disclose their names. Khinshtein emphasized the urgent need for caution among residents, alerting them to the presence of unexploded ordnance that remains a serious threat in border regions, particularly following incursions by Ukrainian forces last August.
While Russia’s military claims to have eradicated the presence of Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region following a counteroffensive, concerns persist about the safety of civilians. Mine-clearing operations initiated in March are ongoing but are expected to take more than a year to complete, according to local officials.
The mining incident comes on the heels of another recent explosion, which injured a state media camera operator in the same vicinity. Khinshtein has consistently warned against the risks associated with wandering into these dangerous areas, as many civilians remain unaware of the risks presented by undetected mines.
Nikolai Ivanov, a representative from the Kursk region in Russia’s State Duma, remarked on the increasingly difficult conditions faced by residents. He described life in the area as “even more challenging than during the occupation,” attributing this to continued air attacks from Ukraine. Ivanov expressed a sense of despair among locals, suggesting that civilians are bearing the brunt of ongoing hostilities.
