Stamford, Conn. — A state judge has sentenced Ian Evans to a lengthy prison term following his conviction for multiple charges related to a shooting that claimed the life of a local mother. The decision was made during a recent hearing at Stamford Superior Court, according to officials from the state’s Division of Criminal Justice.
Evans, 33, faced the sentencing a little over a month after a jury acquitted him of murder but found him guilty of first-degree manslaughter, first-degree assault, and criminal use of a firearm. This ruling comes in the wake of a violent incident that occurred in the early hours of September 20, 2020, when gunfire erupted at an East Side gathering, ultimately taking the life of 35-year-old Shernetta Dunmore.
Dunmore was attending an end-of-summer party when she was fatally struck by a stray bullet. During the trial, prosecutors painted a poignant picture of her as a devoted mother who was enjoying a night out and became an innocent victim in a chaotic situation. Witnesses described the scene as tragic, emphasizing that Dunmore was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
According to law enforcement, around 30 shots were fired during the incident, resulting in injuries to two other men, both of whom survived. Investigators utilized video surveillance footage to pinpoint Evans as one of the suspected shooters.
