Police say two suspects in dark clothing fled after gunfire erupted in the parking lot.
CLEARWATER, Fla. — A man was shot and killed and four other people were wounded just before 8 p.m. Sunday outside Fuzzy’s Sports Bar & Grill on South Highland Avenue, Clearwater police said. Officers found the man in the parking lot as other victims arrived at a nearby hospital.
Police said the shooting unfolded in the lot of the sports bar at 1270 S. Highland Ave. on Sunday night, Dec. 7, and does not appear to have been random. Detectives were still interviewing witnesses and collecting surveillance video Monday. The case remains active, with the department asking for tips while investigators work to identify two suspects who ran after the gunfire. One victim died at the scene; four others were taken to Morton Plant Hospital by someone who did not remain, according to police.
Officers were dispatched following multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired outside the business shortly before 8 p.m. When they arrived, they found a man mortally wounded in the lot. He was later identified by police as 24-year-old Jordan Javontay Walls. Four additional victims — men in their early to late 20s — arrived at Morton Plant Hospital by private vehicle; the driver left the hospital, investigators said. In a written statement, police said detectives believe “two men dressed in dark clothing” opened fire and then fled. “We do not believe this was a random act,” the statement said.
By Monday morning, detectives had released the names and ages of the survivors: Teron Albert Dudley, 27; Jaheim Jabez Maxie, 23; Lamar Johnson, 23; and Antwone Jackquezz Holmes, 22. Officials did not immediately provide conditions for the wounded. Investigators were canvassing nearby businesses for camera footage and reviewing surveillance video from the bar’s parking lot. Police said the initial review suggests the victims were targeted, but they did not release a possible motive. No arrests had been announced as of Monday afternoon.
The shooting drew officers from across the area to the commercial corridor south of downtown Clearwater, where Fuzzy’s sits among other small shops and restaurants. The incident comes amid a broader rise-and-fall cycle of nightlife-area shootings in Pinellas County in recent years, though Clearwater police noted most cases involve people who know each other. Sunday’s gunfire was confined to the parking lot, and detectives said there was no continuing threat to the public after the suspects fled. The bar remained closed during the initial phase of the investigation as crime scene technicians worked under floodlights.
Detectives outlined several next steps: process shell casings and ballistic evidence collected at the scene; analyze video from surrounding businesses; and track the privately driven vehicle that left Morton Plant Hospital after dropping off victims. Police said they will also seek search warrants if needed for digital evidence and are coordinating with the State Attorney’s Office on potential charges once suspects are identified. Officials said any formal charging decisions could come after witness interviews are completed this week.
On Monday, workers swept glass from the lot while yellow markers still dotted the pavement where investigators photographed evidence. A small cluster of patrons returned to the strip plaza to retrieve cars left overnight. “It was chaos — you heard the pops and people ran,” said Courtney Rose Roach, who shared a photo of the taped-off lot after the shooting. A nearby shop owner said officers asked to review his security video and collected a copy before sunrise. “They were in and out all night,” he said.
As of late Monday, police said the suspects remained at large and detectives were still gathering statements and video. Officials said they expect to release updates as evidence is processed this week.
