Police said three people fled west in a dark-colored sedan after the shooting.
CHICAGO, Ill. — A man was shot and killed Saturday night in Gage Park after three people got out of a dark-colored sedan and confronted him on West 54th Street, Chicago police said.
The shooting happened about 8:58 p.m. in the 2900 block of West 54th Street, near Francisco Avenue on the Southwest Side. Police said the man was walking when the sedan pulled up, setting off an argument and fight that ended with gunfire. No one was in custody as of the latest police update.
Police said three people got out of the sedan and began arguing with the man. The dispute turned physical, and one person pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times, according to investigators. The man died at the scene. Police said the group then got back into the vehicle and drove west on 54th Street.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the man as Nelson N. Urrutia, 35, of Addison. Earlier police information listed the victim as 32, but the medical examiner later released his name and age. Authorities have not said what started the argument or whether Urrutia knew the people who approached him.
The shooting drew Area One detectives to the residential block, where police worked to collect evidence and review what happened before the sedan left the area. Investigators have not released a license plate number, a fuller vehicle description or descriptions of the three people involved.
Gage Park sits on Chicago’s Southwest Side, where blocks of homes, schools and small businesses line busy streets including 55th Street, Western Avenue and California Avenue. The killing added another homicide investigation to a weekend in which Chicago police were also responding to other shootings across the city.
No charges had been announced. Area One detectives were leading the investigation and had not reported any arrests. Police have not released details on recovered shell casings, surveillance video or witness statements tied to the case.
The case remained open Tuesday, May 5, with investigators still seeking the people who left the scene in the dark-colored sedan. The next major update is expected if police identify suspects, announce charges or release new details about the vehicle.
