Manchester, New Hampshire – A 35-year-old man, Jake Chiaradonna, died after being shot by a police officer in Manchester. Chiaradonna was taken to a hospital and succumbed to his injuries several hours later. The shooting occurred in the vicinity of Pine and Plummer streets, after two patrol officers spotted Chiaradonna in a car. He was wanted in connection with a robbery that took place on January 11th.
A video taken by a witness shows Manchester police surrounding a vehicle on Plummer Street, followed by Chiaradonna running behind a house with SWAT officers in pursuit. Moments later, gunshots were heard. The incident left nearby residents like Olga Hannon and her 3-year-old son feeling nervous and concerned for their safety.
According to investigators, Chiaradonna refused to exit the car and started behaving erratically when officers responded. Despite attempts to use less-than-lethal force, Chiaradonna resisted being taken into custody. In addition, he stabbed a police dog with a screwdriver and fled on foot, initiating a pursuit by the K-9 unit and other officers. Subsequently, Chiaradonna confronted officers and was shot, leading to his hospitalization and eventual passing.
The deceased had been under supervised release after serving a federal prison sentence for bank robbery. In 2017, Chiaradonna pleaded guilty to robbing two banks in Rochester. Manchester police Chief Allen Aldenberg emphasized the dangerous nature of Chiaradonna and expressed confidence in the actions taken by the officers involved in the incident. The attorney general’s office and New Hampshire State Police are currently conducting an investigation.
