MADISON, Wis. – Students and staff at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison returned to classes today, marking their first day back since a tragic mass shooting that took place last month. The incident, which occurred on December 16th, involved a 15-year-old student opening fire in a classroom, resulting in the deaths of a teacher, Erin West, 42, and a student, Rubi Vergara, 14. Additionally, six others sustained injuries during the attack. The shooter, who was a student at the school, died by suicide.
In response to the shooting, the school’s principal, Dr. Doug Butler, announced various safety enhancements to the school building. Dr. Butler emphasized the importance of trauma-informed care for both students and staff, highlighting the need to recognize and address trauma in the aftermath of such a tragic event.
