Manchac, Louisiana – A massive pileup involving a staggering 168 vehicles on the I-55 interstate in south Louisiana resulted in at least eight fatalities and left over 60 people injured. The incident was caused by a combination of “superfog” from south Louisiana marsh fires and dense fog. As authorities continue the search for victims, Governor John Bel Edwards has issued a call for blood donors to aid the injured.
Videos and images of the aftermath of the pileup depict a scene of devastation, with countless cars mangled and engulfed in flames. The lack of visibility on the interstate also prompted closures of parts of I-10 and the 24-mile Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.
The pileup left a deep impact on those involved – one driver, Christopher Coll, recounted the chaotic and harrowing experience of being caught in the wreckage, as well as his efforts to escape and assist others. The extensive debris and damage from the crashes led to closures and evacuations of the area, impacting both motorists and local schools.
The incident was the result of a rare combination of factors, including wetland fires in the region that mixed with fog to create a “superfog”.
