MULTIPLE DEATHS AND HOSPITALIZATIONS LINKED TO CONTAMINATED READY MEALS IN THE U.S.
Springfield, Illinois — A serious outbreak of listeria linked to frozen ready meals has resulted in multiple fatalities and numerous hospitalizations across the United States, prompting a health warning from federal officials. Reports indicate that four individuals have died and 19 others have been hospitalized in connection with this outbreak, which spans 15 states.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising consumers to be cautious, particularly regarding pasta meals sold at various retailers, including Walmart, Trader Joe’s, and Kroger. Among the cases reported, one illness associated with pregnancy led to a fetal loss, alarming expectant mothers and health professionals alike.
Investigations have traced the listeria contamination to pasta produced by Nate’s Fine Foods, a supplier based in California. This tainted pasta has been an ingredient in several popular meal options, including beef meatball marinara linguine and chicken fettuccine alfredo, manufactured by FreshRealm, a New Jersey-based company. These meals were widely distributed under the Marketside brand at Walmart and Kroger throughout the country.
In addition to FreshRealm’s offerings, California Ranch Food Company utilized the same contaminated pasta for its own Trader Joe’s product, Cajun blackened chicken fettuccine alfredo. Albertsons has also recalled a bowtie pasta meal made by Fresh Creative Foods as part of the broader alert.
Although all recalled products have been removed from store shelves, health officials express concern that consumers may still have these meals in their homes. The CDC notes that many cases may be undiagnosed, as individuals can recover from listeriosis without seeking medical help. It often takes weeks for illnesses to be confirmed as part of an outbreak.
The outbreak has claimed lives in several states, including Illinois, Michigan, Texas, and Utah. However, officials caution that it could extend beyond these areas; the CDC states, “This outbreak may not have been limited to the states with known illnesses.”
Individuals who consume food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes are at risk for a severe infection known as listeriosis, which predominantly affects older adults, those with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women. Symptoms may range from high fever and severe headache to nausea and abdominal pain, with severe cases potentially leading to confusion and convulsions.
On September 25, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed that a popular frozen meal sold at Walmart—Marketside Linguine with Beef Meatballs & Marinara Sauce—tested positive for the harmful bacteria. This meal comes in a 12-ounce plastic tray marked with establishment numbers EST. 50784 and EST. 47718, with various best-by dates extending into October 2025.
Following the USDA’s guidance, FreshRealm initiated immediate recall procedures and is assisting health officials in testing for the source of the contamination. A representative indicated that testing has confirmed listeria in the product, apparently linked to the pasta supplied by Nate’s Fine Foods.
FreshRealm has committed to cooperating with both the FDA and CDC as the investigation unfolds. The USDA suggested that further products could still be implicated, emphasizing the need for consumers to remain vigilant. Federal agencies recommend that anyone who has purchased these meals not consume them and dispose of or return any affected products to the place of purchase.
In response to the situation, retailers like Walmart have already removed the implicated meals from their shelves, while Trader Joe’s is offering full refunds to concerned customers who may have purchased the affected fettuccine Alfredo meals. The ongoing investigation aims to ensure public safety and prevent future outbreaks related to contaminated food products.
