COLUMBIA, S.C. — The family of Deshawn Carroway, who was fatally shot at CK Mart in July, has initiated legal action against the convenience store’s owners, alleging negligence in maintaining safety at the location. A news conference held Wednesday at 2 p.m. near the store revealed details of the lawsuit.
Carroway was reportedly confronted by the accused shooter, Desmond Coleman, outside the store in the early hours of July 2. According to the lawsuit, Coleman and several accomplices spent hours loitering at the site before following Carroway inside. The complaint states that Coleman left the store to retrieve a firearm and returned to shoot Carroway multiple times as he attempted to exit.
The filed lawsuit claims that CK Acquisitions, the parent company of CK Mart, has long been aware of ongoing violence and criminal activities at the convenience store. Incidents have included shootings, assaults, and drug-related overdoses, yet the company failed to implement adequate safety measures.
Tyler Bailey, the family’s attorney, expressed grave concerns over the management of the store and highlighted a pattern of negligence. Bailey previously represented a different family in relation to another shooting incident at CK Mart in 2021. He asserts that if the store cannot ensure a safe environment, it should be shut down entirely.
