Norwich, England — A night out for two friends turned into a life-altering nightmare when they encountered two teenagers armed with knives on what has been dubbed one of the region’s most dangerous streets. The violent incident occurred early on April 6 on Prince of Wales Road, resulting in severe injuries for both victims, Ionut Buzdugan and Stephan Rusu.
Eighteen-year-old Iwo Grudowski and a 17-year-old, who cannot be named due to legal restrictions, launched an unprovoked attack on the Romanian men, leaving them with injuries that necessitated extensive medical treatment. Rusu, who has since returned to Romania, suffered multiple stab wounds to his torso, requiring a portion of his intestine to be surgically removed. Meanwhile, Buzdugan sustained a severe head injury that has left him with an open wound.
Grudowski, who was later tried for his role in the incident, was found not guilty of attempted murder but admitted to causing grievous bodily harm and possessing a weapon. As a result, he received a 40-month sentence in a Young Offenders Institution. His co-defendant, the unnamed 17-year-old, acknowledged his involvement and was given a Youth Rehabilitation Order, which includes community service and a curfew.
Before the court handed down its sentences, Buzdugan shared the haunting impact of the attack on his life. He expressed ongoing physical pain and mental distress, indicating difficulties in performing everyday tasks. The wound on the left side of his head remains untreated and is subject to weekly medical attention, with future surgery likely required to repair the damage.
“I continue to struggle with the physical effects of these injuries,” Buzdugan explained. The psychological aftermath has also been troubling. A vivid memory of his friend being attacked plays repeatedly in his mind, leaving him feeling haunted and unable to shift his focus from the traumatic event.
This experience has deprived Buzdugan of his ability to work, causing significant financial strain as he finds himself relying on loans from friends to make ends meet. The psychological and physical toll of the incident has drastically transformed his life, with despair about the future of his recovery and well-being.
Detective Constable Adam Ruskin expressed gratitude towards the victims for their cooperation throughout the criminal proceedings, emphasizing the distress caused by the spontaneous violence witnessed by others in the area. The community continues to feel the ripple effects of such acts of violence, raising concerns about public safety and the rising prevalence of knife crime.
The court session underscored the emotions surrounding youth violence and behavioral issues influenced by substance abuse, with the defense for the younger offender attributing his actions to intoxication on the night of the assault.
