CLOVIS, California — A local family is grieving and advocating for justice after their son suffered severe injuries in what they describe as an unprovoked attack. The incident took place early Thursday morning, leaving 37-year-old Geoff Bernardi fighting for his life.
Erin Adams, Bernardi’s mother, expressed her heartache as she reflected on the distressing changes to her son. “It’s difficult for me to be in the same room with him; it’s like looking at a stranger,” she said tearfully.
The assault occurred when Bernardi stepped outside to smoke, violating apartment complex rules. While at the canal bank, he was approached by an individual who requested a cigarette. Adams recounted that after her son complied, he was violently struck in the head, leading to a brutal beating that left him critically injured.
This tragic event unfolded near the Dry Creek canal, situated behind the Pacific Grove Apartments on Barstow and Villa avenues. According to Clovis Police, this type of crime is unusual for the area. “We do receive calls for various incidents, but nothing quite like this,” police spokesperson Ty Wood commented.
Medical experts indicated that the severity of Bernardi’s injuries pointed to the use of an object rather than just fists during the attack. As authorities investigate the incident as aggravated battery, they are urging community members to come forward with any information that could aid in identifying the assailant. Wood noted that detectives and crime scene personnel are actively searching for physical evidence in the vicinity.
“The community’s input could be invaluable in preventing something like this from happening again,” Adams said, pleading for any leads regarding the attack.
Bernardi, remembered as a loving educator within the Clovis Unified School District, had developed strong connections with students through his work in theater. Adams shared heartfelt sentiments, recalling her son’s caring nature and the void his absence leaves. “Thank you for your love and support. You’ve cared for your family so deeply. We miss you dearly, and this time feels far too short.”
As they face this painful chapter, the family has made the heartbreaking decision to remove Bernardi from life support, choosing to honor his legacy through organ donation in hopes of saving others’ lives. Clovis Police confirmed that, as of Friday, no arrests had been made related to this violent incident.
