Oxnard, California — A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 years and eight months in state prison for a brutal sexual assault on a female truck driver. Jose Luis Meza Jr. pled guilty on September 29 to charges of assault with intent to commit rape and forcible oral copulation, as well as admitting to prior offenses that contributed to the severity of his sentence.
The incident occurred on September 14, 2020, when the victim was asleep in the cab of her truck parked in an industrial area of Oxnard. She awoke to find Meza Jr. inside her vehicle, demanding money. He then climbed into the sleeping area and sexually assaulted her, despite her attempts to resist. The victim managed to escape the assault and sought help from a nearby business while Meza Jr. fled the scene.
Investigating officers obtained surveillance footage from the surrounding area, which captured Meza Jr. exiting the victim’s truck after the assault. He was seen wearing a distinctive yellow sweatshirt and discarding a water bottle. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office later tested the bottle and identified DNA that matched Meza Jr.
Following the attack, law enforcement had multiple contacts with Meza Jr. related to unrelated incidents both before and after the crime. In each instance, he was wearing the same yellow sweatshirt, providing further evidence linking him to the assault. He was arrested on August 13, 2024, thanks to a collaborative investigation between the Oxnard Police Department and District Attorney’s office.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Brent Nibecker emphasized the importance of forensic science in delivering justice in this case. He commended the commitment of the forensic partners at the Sheriff’s Forensic Services Bureau for their role in ensuring that the victim received justice and in making the community safer.
