Chelmsford, England – A man in Great Baddow near Chelmsford, England, has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his estranged wife, Elise Mason. Mark Donovan, 40, was given a minimum of 18 years behind bars by Judge Chris Morgan at Chelmsford Crown Court. Mason’s body was discovered with over 70 injuries at Donovan’s residence in April 2023.
During the trial, jurors learned that Donovan and Mason’s relationship had deteriorated in 2022, with Donovan suspecting that she had moved on to a new partner. The court heard that on the day of the murder, Mason, a 37-year-old mother of two, was lured to Donovan’s home under the pretense of receiving an early birthday present. Despite Donovan’s claims that he was acting in self-defense, the court found no evidence to support his allegations.
Following the murder, Donovan was seen having a drink at a local pub before turning himself in to authorities at a police station in east London. The court also heard that Donovan had a history of violence, having previously threatened Mason and her new partner. Despite attempts to blame Mason for the altercation, Judge Morgan emphasized Donovan’s lack of remorse and the tragic impact of his actions on Mason’s family.
