Chattanooga, Tennessee — A Tennessee inmate was fatally injured in an assault by another inmate at the Hamilton County Jail, prompting an investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). The incident occurred on Friday in the facility’s “George Unit,” where staff responded to reports of a violent altercation involving a makeshift weapon.
Corrections officials with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office reported that the injured inmate, identified as Leslie Walker, received immediate medical attention within a minute of the attack. However, despite rapid responses from jail staff and emergency personnel, Walker was pronounced dead before he could be transported to a hospital.
The suspected assailant, Christopher Walton, barricaded himself in his cell following the incident. The Sheriff’s Special Response Team was deployed to extract him. Walker was incarcerated on multiple charges, including attempted murder and aggravated assault, while Walton’s charges ranged from possession of a firearm with a felony conviction to stalking.
This incident marks the fourth in-custody death at the Hamilton County facility this year. The local authorities have emphasized the importance of addressing the rising frequency of such events, particularly following a recent incident involving another inmate with a chronic illness who also died in custody.
Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp has directed the TBI to investigate the circumstances surrounding Walker’s death. Upon completion, the investigation’s findings are expected to be reviewed by Wamp’s office.
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office has expressed condolences to Walker’s family and urged the community to keep them in their thoughts during this tragic time. They acknowledge the ongoing concerns regarding inmate safety and the overall conditions within the facility, prompting an ongoing discourse on the need for reforms in inmate care and oversight.
As investigations continue, officials stress a commitment to uncovering the truth behind these troubling occurrences, following the growing scrutiny of the jail’s operational practices. This pressing issue highlights broader concerns regarding the treatment of inmates and the adequacy of resources allocated to correctional facilities throughout the region.
