New York – Six corrections officers in upstate New York have been charged with second-degree murder in the killing of inmate Robert Brooks at Marcy Correctional Facility. Footage from body cameras captured the violent beating, leading to outrage from advocates and lawmakers.
Brooks, 43, was handcuffed when the officers allegedly assaulted him, causing his death the following day. The autopsy revealed he died from neck compression and multiple blunt force injuries, ruling his death a homicide.
The incident occurred just hours after Brooks was transferred to Marcy Correctional Facility in December. He had been serving a 12-year sentence for first-degree assault since 2017. The county medical examiner’s office confirmed it was a homicide in January.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced murder charges against the officers in February. The accused officers, including Nicholas Anzalone, David Kingsley, and others, are also facing manslaughter charges.
The Correctional Association of New York has documented a history of alleged abuse at Marcy Correctional Facility, including reports of staff violence against inmates. The case is ongoing, with legal proceedings expected to continue, despite a wildcat strike among corrections officers complicating matters.
Robert Brooks’ father expressed hope for justice, while Governor Hochul condemned the attack and promised swift prosecution. The role of body-camera footage in securing charges was emphasized by the executive director of the Correctional Association of New York.
