ATLANTA — A heroic act unfolded Tuesday night when a passerby rescued a man from the wreckage of an apartment explosion in downtown Atlanta. The explosion, triggered by alleged illegal activity in a vacant building, left one person hospitalized and multiple residents displaced.
Clayton Still, who was returning from an Atlanta Hawks game with friends, immediately rushed to the scene after hearing distressing screams for help. “It was chaotic,” Still recalled. “I jumped out of the car and ran around a building, and that’s when I realized someone was trapped inside.”
Responding to the urgent cries, Still entered the burning structure, where he found a man in dire need of assistance. As captured in a 911 call, Still described the victim as being in severe condition, with significant burns covering much of his body. “The smell of gas was overwhelming,” he stated, recalling the immediate danger as he navigated through the debris to reach the man.
Once inside, Still focused solely on the task at hand, maneuvering through shattered glass and fallen debris. “It looked like a war zone,” he said. His determination led him to carry the injured man to safety, where he handed him off to arriving police officers. “We had two choices: either sit in the car and listen to the cries for help or take action,” Still emphasized.
The explosion occurred at Northside Plaza Apartments, prompting multiple 911 calls from nearby residents who had reported a strong gas smell earlier that day. Jeremiah Brooks, an executive chef at a neighboring business, noted that fire department personnel had investigated the area but found no gas leak at that time.
According to a statement from Integral Property Management, the explosion was linked to an attempted copper theft, which led to gas accumulation inside the building. The ignition of the accumulated gas sparked the blast that ravaged the facility.
First responders quickly arrived on the scene, where they managed the chaotic aftermath and initiated an investigation into the explosion’s causes. The Atlanta Fire Department is actively looking into the incident to ascertain further details.
