Mirzapur, India – As a blistering heatwave sweeps across several regions of India, the toll of suspected heatstroke deaths rises to at least 61 on May 31. Among the victims are 23 poll personnel who were involved in the final phase of the Lok Sabha election, scheduled to conclude on Saturday. In Bihar, 14 people, including 10 linked to the election process, have succumbed to heatstroke within the last 24 hours, with five fatalities reported from Bhojpur and the remaining from Rohtas, Kaimur, and Aurangabad districts.
In Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district, 13 individuals are believed to have perished from heatstroke after being admitted to Maa Vindhyavasini Autonomous State Medical College. The deceased include home guard jawans, sanitation workers, a clerk from the Chief Medical Officer’s office, a consolidation officer, and a peon. In Rajasthan, four deaths attributed to heat-related causes have been confirmed.
Odisha reports 26 deaths, with five of them deemed to be sunstroke-related. High temperatures coupled with dehydration and the heat emanating from metal truck bodies have been cited as possible causes of the fatalities, particularly among truck drivers. Strict precautions, such as advising people in Jharsuguda not to venture out between 10am and 4pm, have been enforced to combat the extreme heatwave conditions.
Jharkhand sees four deaths from heatstroke, with over 1,300 individuals hospitalized due to heat-related issues across the state. With hospitals preparing air-conditioned rooms and empty beds for heatstroke patients, efforts are being made to manage the escalating situation. The India Meteorological Department indicates severe heatwave conditions prevailing over multiple parts of the nation, with the southwest monsoon recently commencing in Kerala and northeastern India.
While temperatures have begun to ease in several states, the overall situation remains critical. As the country waits for widespread monsoon rains, the impact of the heatwave continues to take a toll on communities across India.
