Charlotte, North Carolina – The family of a student at Ardrey Kell High School is demanding that an incident where she was injured be investigated as a hate crime. The student alleges that during a fight, her attacker used a racial slur and told her to “go back to my country.”
According to WCNC Charlotte, the altercation took place in a classroom, leading to significant injuries for one of the students involved. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools confirmed the incident and stated that medical assistance was called to evaluate the injured student’s condition.
Described as a brutal attack, the victim, referred to as “Miss USA” by Jibril Hough of the Islamic Center of Charlotte, is set to undergo surgery for multiple broken bones in her face. Furthermore, it is claimed that CMS officials advised the victim’s parents against speaking publicly about the situation.
In response to the attack and what they perceive as a lack of support from CMS, the family and Hough plan to hold a news conference to address the issue. This comes shortly after a disturbing threat was found written on the school’s bathroom walls and amidst previous apologies from CMS regarding communication failures in response to threats made against schools.
Superintendent Crystal Hill has issued a video apology following these incidents, acknowledging the need for improved communication practices within the school district. The incident has sparked concerns about safety and inclusivity within the school community, prompting calls for a thorough investigation into the attack as a potential hate crime.
