PENSACOLA, Fla. – Authorities in Florida swiftly responded to a report of gunshots at the Corry Station, a Navy installation in Pensacola. Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons assured the public that there were “no signs of an active shooter” and thankfully, no injuries were reported. Following a thorough sweep of the facility, law enforcement authorities and military personnel deemed it safe to reopen, bringing a sense of relief to the community.
The incident, initially reported around 10:15 a.m., prompted a prompt and exhaustive search by deputies, ultimately yielding no evidence of a shooting or any victims. With all available deputies mobilized to Corry Station, in cooperation with military personnel, the authorities were able to clear the area after nearly two hours of intensive investigation.
Corry Station, a sub-installation under the larger Naval Air Station Pensacola command, houses various units including the Navy’s Center for Information Warfare Training as well as civilian and Marine operations. The Naval Air Station Pensacola had experienced a tragic shooting incident in December 2019, which reignited concerns about security on military bases. In that incident, a Saudi student opened fire in a classroom, resulting in the loss of three sailors’ lives and injuring several others, including law enforcement officers. The deputies heroically took down the shooter, quelling the threat promptly.
Following the 2019 shooting, the authorities took decisive actions, sending home 21 Saudi military students who exhibited concerning behaviors, such as jihadist or anti-American sentiments on social media. There was no evidence of their involvement in the shooting, but the precautionary measures underscored the importance of vigilance in safeguarding military installations from potential threats.
