Garland, Texas – A chaotic scene unfolded in Garland, Texas, as police engaged in a massive shootout after being ambushed by a man firing over 100 gunshots. The incident began with multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire in the area of 1st Street and West Wanda Drive late at night.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers were met with a volley of bullets, with one officer sustaining injuries to both legs. Despite receiving immediate medical attention from colleagues, the shooter managed to flee the area, only to be later spotted driving a white pickup truck.
The suspect then took cover behind parked cars, engaging officers in a second round of gunfire. Backup officers arrived, leading to a fatal exchange that ended with the suspect being shot and killed by law enforcement on the scene.
The shooter was identified as 24-year-old Bernardo Mares, though his motive for targeting police officers remains unclear. Witnesses reported that he expressed a desire to be killed by police rather than being taken into custody.
Fortunately, the injured officer is in stable condition and recovering well. Chief of Police Jeff Bryan praised the officer’s bravery, highlighting his remarkable composure during the intense exchange of gunfire.
