Fugitive Teen Arrested Following Tragic Shooting of 69-Year-Old Grandmother Amid Botched Robbery Attempt

New York City authorities apprehended an 18-year-old fugitive on Thursday, just days after he was linked to a tragic shooting that resulted in the death of a 69-year-old woman. Robin Wright, who relied on a walker, was fatally struck by a stray bullet on August 27 at East 110th Street and Madison Avenue while on a midday walk.

The suspect was detained by Homeland Security Investigations, the NYPD’s Violent Gang Task Force, and the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force. Law enforcement officials indicated that the violence was connected to an attempted robbery involving marijuana that went horribly wrong.

Wright was reportedly walking with a friend when the shooting occurred. Her friend, Juanita Arnold, recounted the moments leading up to the incident, expressing disbelief that such violence could disrupt a simple outing. “This was not necessary. That lady should’ve never died like that,” Arnold said, reflecting on the shock and sorrow of losing her companion in such a senseless manner.

Neighbors described Wright as someone who regularly took walks as part of her rehabilitation following recent surgery on her legs. Arnold noted that Wright was keen to regain her strength and had even asked her grandson to join for lunch during their stroll.

Witnesses reported that the gunfire erupted shortly after the teenage suspect and an accomplice attempted to rob a man just a block away. The robbery victim chased the teen, leading to a confrontation in which gunfire was exchanged. Tragically, one bullet struck Wright, who was innocently passing by, and she collapsed to the ground.

Sonya Hampton, a neighbor who was present at the scene, recalled hearing gunshots and turning to find Wright on the ground. EMS rushed her to Mount Sinai Morningside hospital, but despite their efforts, she could not be saved.

Reports indicate that another suspect in the incident remains at large, adding to the community’s concerns about escalating youth violence. Mayor Eric Adams addressed this troubling trend, stating, “We’re seeing shooters becoming younger and younger,” highlighting the need for more effective preventive measures.

The arrest of the teen suspect occurred shortly after a separate incident where five other young individuals—mostly teenagers—were charged with murder in connection with a drive-by shooting that killed one person and injured several others in the Bronx.

As communities grapple with the fallout from such events, the tragic loss of lives like Wright’s underscores the urgent need for comprehensive approaches to address the underlying factors contributing to gun violence in the city.
