Firefighters Contain Blaze Near Veterans Memorial High School, Safeguard Nearby Homes

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A house fire erupted Sunday night near Veterans Memorial High School, prompting a swift response from local firefighters who successfully contained the flames before they could endanger adjacent homes and residents.

The flames were first spotted around Lipes Boulevard and Cornell Drive, igniting in a backyard and sending nearby neighbors into a state of alarm. Fortunately, no injuries resulted from the incident, although one property suffered damage.

Witnessing the fire unfold was Gena Duval, who was dining at her brother’s home when she noticed an intense orange glow illuminating the window. “My sister-in-law went outside for a drink and heard strange noises. At that moment, I turned to look toward the backyard and saw enormous flames,” Duval recounted. Both women quickly realized they needed to evacuate the area for safety.

The yard of Duval’s brother, situated directly behind the affected house, was not spared entirely; the flames scorched his shed as the fire spread with alarming speed.

Firefighters from the Corpus Christi Fire Department arrived within minutes of receiving the emergency call. Upon arrival, they discovered the blaze raging in the backyard and took immediate steps to control it, successfully preventing it from engulfing the house itself.

Battalion Chief Scott Marsh noted the firefighters encountered some hazardous conditions upon arrival, including reported explosions that may have originated from propane tanks. He indicated that it took crews approximately 20 minutes to gain control of the fire, but fortunately, there were no injuries reported among those present.

Currently, the cause of the fire is still under investigation by the fire department, as officials work to determine what led to the blaze that disrupted the quiet evening for nearby residents. Local authorities continue to encourage vigilance regarding fire safety, especially during unpredictable conditions that could lead to similar incidents.

As the investigation unfolds, firefighters stress the importance of maintaining safety measures, especially in residential areas where homes are in close proximity to one another.
