GEAUGA COUNTY, Ohio — A local firefighter remains in critical condition following a home explosion that severely injured him and his daughter on November 21. Captain Tim Tobin of the Hambden Township Fire Department was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center due to extensive burns after the incident at his Montville Township residence.
Fire Chief Scott Hildenbrand reported that Tobin’s daughter, Savannah, is showing signs of improvement in her recovery process. However, the nature of their injuries has left the community deeply concerned and rallying for support.
The explosion, which occurred around 2:40 p.m. on Hart Road, resulted in the home being engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived. Tragically, two dogs were inside the house during the explosion. One did not survive, and the other remains unaccounted for.
Montville Township Fire Chief Ron Jonovich confirmed that the cause of the explosion is still under investigation by the Geauga County Fire Investigation Unit as well as the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Initial reports indicated that Captain Tobin was not in the basement, as previously speculated, but rather in the living room when the explosion took place.
Emergency services from three surrounding counties responded to the scene, providing critical assistance, including tankers and ambulances. Chief Hildenbrand noted the collaborative effort among various agencies, underscoring the severity of the situation.
Captain Tobin has been a dedicated member of the Hambden Fire Department since 1997, where he has served in several capacities, including Chief Engineer and Lieutenant. His commitment to the community has also extended to leading the Fire Explorers Program, mentoring young people interested in firefighting.
In recognition of his service, Tobin earned the Hambden Fire Department Officer of the Year award in both 2007 and 2008, demonstrating his dedication and leadership. Additionally, he served in the U.S. Army, further exemplifying his commitment to public service.
As the investigation into the explosion continues, community members are coming together to support the Tobin family during this challenging time, reflecting the strong ties that bind residents of Geauga County. Local organizations have begun fundraising efforts to aid in medical expenses and recovery for Captain Tobin and his daughter.
