Dinas Powys, Wales—A family of seven is grappling with the aftermath of a devastating house fire that obliterated their home early Wednesday morning. The blaze ripped through the end-terrace property on Caerphilly Close, prompting the emergency services to respond swiftly around midnight.
The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service reported that crews were dispatched at 12:09 a.m. and arrived to find the fire engulfing the structure. Fortunately, all residents had evacuated before firefighters reached the scene, allowing them to focus on extinguishing the flames without delay. Firefighters utilized specialized equipment, including four breathing apparatuses and dual 45mm jets, to bring the situation under control by approximately 4:06 a.m. Investigators later determined that an accidental fire caused by a lithium-ion battery was to blame.
Matthew Ann Buckler, the family’s father, described the terrifying moments as the fire escalated rapidly. “It was just a shootout in the hallway,” he recounted. “The whole place went up in about ten minutes. We made it out just in time, and my daughter had to jump out of a window to escape.” The family now faces the grim reality of losing all possessions, leaving them uncertain of their next steps.
Compounding their challenges, the family is currently navigating insurance options and temporary housing. “We’re unsure where we will stay for now,” Buckler said, revealing that they are sifting through paperwork for clarity. “This has been overwhelming.”
In a show of community solidarity, Matthew’s daughter, Chelsea Ann Buckler, has set up a crowdfunding campaign to assist the family in their recovery. Her heartfelt plea outlines the family’s plight, stating, “This tragedy has left us all in shock and struggling to find our footing. With five children and two adults, the road ahead feels overwhelming.” She expressed gratitude for any form of support, whether it be financial contributions or donated toiletries.
Despite the profound loss, Buckler took a moment to recognize the efforts of emergency responders. “I want to publicly thank the firefighters for their outstanding work—they were incredible,” he noted.
Currently, the family does not have access to their home, and the only images of the destruction come from the GoFundMe page created for their appeal. Community members have rallied behind the family, sharing the crowdfunding link and offering help, providing a glimmer of hope as they navigate the arduous journey to rebuild their lives.
