SALT LAKE CITY — In a promising development for road safety, traffic fatalities in Utah have decreased year-over-year, marking the state’s lowest death toll from vehicle accidents since 2019. Preliminary figures released by state transportation and public safety officials indicate that 264 lives were lost on Utah’s roads in 2025, a notable reduction from the 277 fatalities recorded in 2024.
The decline signals progress, but safety advocates stress that any loss of life is unacceptable. Shaunna Burbidge, program manager for Zero Fatalities, emphasized the importance of understanding the persistent dangers on the roads. “These statistics remind us that the choices we make while driving have the power to save lives,” she stated.
Despite the overall decrease, certain demographics remain at heightened risk. Notably, fatalities among motorcyclists surged by 32% compared to the previous year, while the number of teenage deaths on the road nearly doubled. A total of 31 teenagers were killed in accidents in 2025, compared to just 18 the year before.
Officials from the Department of Public Safety noted that these statistics underscore the critical need for greater awareness and safety measures among motorcyclists. They highlighted the importance of visibility, protective equipment, and adherence to safe speeds. Additionally, the risks faced by young drivers were attributed to common issues such as distractions, reckless behavior, and lack of experience.
Sgt. Mike Alexander from the Utah Highway Patrol reiterated the collective responsibility of all road users. “Every journey we take comes with choices that can have lifelong consequences for ourselves and others. These tragedies are preventable,” he remarked. He encouraged all drivers to prioritize focus and sobriety, and to ensure that everyone in their vehicles is wearing seatbelts.
Officials are also calling for increased education and outreach to both young drivers and motorcyclists, aiming to address the startling trends observed in the latest statistics.
