SYDNEY, Australia – Australian police have revealed that a caravan discovered in northwestern Sydney earlier this year, packed with explosives and displaying antisemitic messages, was part of a fabricated terrorism plot concocted by criminals. The discovery of the caravan in January caused widespread panic, especially following a series of antisemitic attacks in Australia.
Authorities from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) stated that they quickly determined the caravan was a criminal hoax after finding it. Although initially refraining from informing the public to avoid causing alarm, the AFP later confirmed that the entire plot, including tip-offs about related terror activities, was fabricated.
According to the deputy commissioner of national security, Krissy Barrett, the fake caravan plot involved multiple individuals with varying levels of involvement, including the purchase of a caravan, loading it with explosives and antisemitic materials, and leaving it in a specific location to falsely report an impending terror attack against Jewish Australians. The police believe the orchestrator of the scheme hired local criminals to carry out different aspects of the operation and has not yet been apprehended.
Barrett emphasized the elaborate nature of the plot, describing it as a scheme devised by organized criminals, some operating from abroad. She noted that the criminals behind these types of fake incidents may seek changes to their criminal status or attempt to divert law enforcement resources. The intent behind the caravan hoax remains under investigation.
In a separate development, New South Wales police arrested 14 individuals on Monday as part of Strike Force Pearl, an operation established in response to a rise in antisemitic hate crimes across Sydney in late 2024. These incidents included vandalism at a Jewish school and arson at a childcare center, both marked with antisemitic messages. The arrests signal a significant step in addressing the growing concerns within the Jewish community in Australia.
