PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. – Law enforcement officers in Putnam County are facing the dangers of traffic stops, a routine part of their job that can turn deadly in an instant. The recent incident involving Sgt. Ryan Owens highlights the risks that officers face every day.
According to Colonel Joseph Wells of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Owens was injured when an explosive device detonated, covering him in chlorine powder. The incident occurred during a traffic stop near Moseley Avenue and St. Johns Avenue.
Colonel Wells explained that the explosive device was disguised as a PVC pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine. When the sergeant attempted to inspect the pipe, it exploded, releasing a dangerous combination of chemicals. Fortunately, Sgt. Owens survived the blast and is now recovering, with plans to return to duty soon.
The suspect, identified as sixty-year-old Charles Legault, is facing multiple charges, including possessing an explosive device and aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. Authorities also discovered a significant amount of crystal meth inside Legault’s vehicle, leading to additional charges being considered.
Colonel Wells emphasized the potential danger the explosive device posed, expressing relief that Sgt. Owens’ quick actions prevented a more catastrophic outcome. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face in the line of duty.
