Pasadena, California – Authorities have apprehended a 63-year-old man believed to be responsible for a series of over 150 unexplained explosions that have plagued a Pasadena neighborhood over the past two years. The explosions, some reported by residents and most detected through ShotSpotter technology, have caused alarm and concern in the community near Allen Avenue and Washington Boulevard.
Following a recent surge of 14 explosions in the area, investigators managed to link two vehicles to the incidents and ultimately traced them back to a resident of Pasadena. On May 16, responding to another explosion in the neighborhood where officers observed a white cloud rising, police arrested the suspect on the scene, subsequently identifying him as Art Leon Berian.
A statement from the Pasadena Police noted that while evidence was found in Berian’s 2013 BMW in relation to the explosion, fortunately, no injuries have been reported in connection with any of the incidents. Berian has since been charged with three felony counts of explosives with intent to injure or intimidate, with his bond set at $1.5 million.
Without immediate details on a motive or the exact nature of the explosions, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. Berian’s arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday, raising questions about the potential defense strategy he may pursue.
