Explosions Rock Misrata as Ammunition Depot Ignites, Displacing Residents and Shattering Calm

Misrata, Libya — A series of powerful explosions rocked an ammunition depot affiliated with armed groups in Misrata on Wednesday night, causing extensive damage to nearby residential areas and disrupting essential services. The blasts resulted in road closures and left many residents without electricity and communication links.

The explosions occurred in the Al-Sukirat district and lasted for several hours, damaging homes and infrastructure in the surrounding vicinity. Despite the intensity of the incident, authorities have yet to report any casualties.

While the exact cause of the explosions remains unclear, initial reports suggest that the detonations could have been triggered by escalating temperatures or electrical faults. Alternatively, some speculate that they may stem from ongoing conflicts between rival militias in the city, particularly between factions aligned with the Government of National Unity and the opposing “Deterrence Force.”

Social media footage captured the chaos, portraying vivid scenes of flames and thick smoke billowing into the sky. Residents reported hearing the thunderous blasts throughout the city. In addition to the alarming visuals, images revealed missiles and artillery shells littering residential neighborhoods, including a “Grad” missile that struck Anbak Road, leaving a sizable crater.

In an urgent response, the Misrata Security Directorate cordoned off access to roads leading to the affected area and deployed 16 ambulances to assist families who were stranded amid the chaos. Officials have stated that although significant damage occurred, the situation is largely under control.

Local residents voiced their frustrations over the ongoing storage of munitions in close proximity to their homes, expressing deep concerns about potential future incidents. “We are living in constant fear,” one resident remarked, highlighting the anxiety permeating the community.

This incident is not unprecedented in Libya, a country that has seen similar tragedies before. One notable example occurred in 2013 when an ammunition depot exploded in Brak al-Shati, resulting in more than 40 fatalities.

Local authorities are currently investigating the details surrounding Wednesday’s explosions, with expectations that further information will be disclosed in the coming days. The increasing frequency of such incidents raises questions about the management of ammunition by armed groups and the broader implications for community safety in the region.
