Melbourne, Australia – Victoria Police has introduced a $1 million reward for information regarding the murder of Gianni “John” Furlan in Melbourne’s north 27 years ago. Mr. Furlan, 48 at the time, lost his life when his car exploded in Coburg North on Monday, August 3, 1998. Investigators later discovered that commercial explosives were attached to the vehicle.
Despite numerous public appeals for information and an extensive investigation by the Arson and Explosives Squad over the years, no one has ever been charged in connection with Furlan’s death, according to a Victoria Police spokesperson. On the day of the incident, Furlan was driving his white Subaru Liberty sedan along Lorensen Avenue in Coburg North when the explosion occurred near Merlynston Railway Station.
The car bombing was described by Detective Inspector Chris Murray as a “shocking, brutal, and horrendous act of violence” that put the lives of innocent civilians at risk. Police revealed that witnesses had reported seeing two suspect vehicles in the days leading up to Furlan’s death. The explosion, heard up to 5 kilometers away, caused significant damage, including shattering nearby shop windows and spreading debris over 300 meters.
Prior to his death, Furlan had traveled to Hobart to visit a friend, during which time investigators believe his car was fitted with an explosive device.
