LEESBURG, Va. – The tragic explosion at a home in Loudoun County, Virginia, has left one volunteer firefighter dead and 13 others injured, prompting an emotional update from Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue Chief Keith Johnson at a recent meeting of the Board of Supervisors.
During the meeting, Johnson provided details on the incident, stating that two firefighters remain hospitalized with severe burns. He expressed optimism about their recovery but acknowledged the long road ahead for both individuals. The firefighters had responded to a call for a possible gas leak and were able to evacuate two residents from the home before the explosion occurred. According to Johnson, a leak in a 500-gallon propane tank led to the accumulation of propane in the house, which ignited during the evacuation.
In total, 14 people were injured, with 10 firefighters, one Loudoun County Sheriff’s Deputy, and two residents being transported to the hospital. Johnson commended the swift response of over 100 fire-rescue units following the explosion.
The fire chief emphasized the importance of taking care of the injured firefighters and working with the Fire Marshal’s Office to investigate the incident. He also mentioned plans for the funeral of the fallen firefighter, Trevor Brown. Additionally, a Significant Incident Review will be conducted, with assistance from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
Johnson expressed gratitude for the support shown by the community, as well as state and federal leaders. He highlighted the gestures of President Joe Biden and Governor Glenn Youngkin, who reached out to Brown’s family and the hospitalized firefighters, respectively.
Vice Chair Juli Briskman (D-Agonkian) shared her firsthand experience of the incident, describing it as unlike anything she had ever seen. She reflected on the longstanding presence of the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company in her life and community, underscoring its significance.
