Barrie, Ontario – A 36-year-old man in Barrie, Ontario is facing multiple charges in connection to a car explosion that led to the evacuation of an apartment building, according to local police on Tuesday. The incident took place in the parking lot at 108A Anne St., near Edgehill Drive and northwest of Highway 400 on September 27, 2023.
Police reports indicated that emergency services received several 911 calls reporting a car explosion in the early hours of the morning. Following the explosion, an improvised explosive device was discovered in a nearby garden, leading investigators to believe it was placed near the gas tank of the exploded car, potentially with another device attached.
Although no injuries were reported as a result of the explosion, the discovery of the exploded car and the unexploded device prompted a precautionary evacuation of the nearby apartment complex, specifically focusing on units with a direct view of the parking lot.
Following a recent arrest in Ajax, a 36-year-old man is now facing charges that include causing an explosion, possessing explosives, making an explosive device, arson, and failure to comply with a release order. The accused is currently in custody and is set to appear in court via video on June 4.
The Barrie Police Service Major Crime Unit stated their appreciation for the community’s assistance and understanding throughout the eight-month investigation that led to the arrest. The unit acknowledged the community’s cooperation and support as critical elements in resolving the case.
