Explosion survivors demand independent probe: Cork inquiry sparks intrigue

Creeslough, Ireland – Questions surrounding the deadly explosion in Creeslough continue to loom large, leaving families of the victims seeking answers. A group representing some of the families impacted by the tragic event is urging the Irish government to launch an independent investigation into the incident, which claimed the lives of 10 individuals in County Donegal in October 2022.

Speaking on behalf of the families, lawyer Damian Tanswey emphasized the need for a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the blast. While expressing confidence in the ongoing criminal investigation led by the Garda, Tanswey stressed the importance of delving deeper into the details of what transpired in Creeslough.

Among those affected by the explosion was Hugh Harper, whose daughter Leona perished in the tragic incident. Harper underscored the families’ longing for closure and the necessity of understanding the events that led to their profound loss. He highlighted the group’s hopeful sentiment following a meeting with government officials, signaling progress towards the possibility of a public inquiry.

Shauna Gallagher, whose sister Jessica was also a victim of the explosion, echoed the sentiments of seeking clarity and closure. Gallagher emphasized the profound impact of the tragedy on their lives and stressed the vital importance of uncovering the truth behind the incident.

Multiple investigations are currently underway, including efforts by the Garda and the Health and Safety Authority to shed light on the explosion. An Garda Síochána affirmed that their inquiry, spearheaded by authorities in Donegal, is ongoing with the intention of presenting their findings to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The families of the victims, represented by solicitor Darragh Mackin, penned a letter to Justice Minister Helen McEntee underscoring the anguish and suffering endured in the aftermath of the explosion. Mackin emphasized the urgent need for an independent investigation to bring clarity and justice to the families impacted by the tragic event.

In a poignant display of solidarity and quest for answers, over 40 individuals from the community of Creeslough made the journey to Government Buildings in Dublin in pursuit of justice and closure. With ministers and officials engaging with the families of the victims, the call for a transparent and exhaustive investigation into the explosion resonates among those affected, seeking solace and resolution in the face of unspeakable loss.
