IOWA CITY, Iowa — A man is facing several drug-related charges following an explosion in a bathroom at a winter shelter. The incident occurred on December 4, 2025, prompting rapid response from both police and fire departments in the area.
Abdiqani Haji Mohamud, 44, was taken into custody after first responders arrived at the Winter Extreme Temperature shelter that early morning. Upon investigation, firefighters discovered no ongoing fire in the bathroom, but they did note signs of distress, including charred marks on the walls, sinks, and mirrors. A melted backpack, containing personal belongings, was also found inside one of the stalls.
Authorities traced the cause of the explosion to a butane canister discovered within the backpack. Haji Mohamud confirmed that the bag belonged to him. During a routine search, police uncovered methamphetamine hidden in his sock, raising concerns about the circumstances leading to the incident.
According to Haji Mohamud, he had been using meth in the bathroom. He explained that as he was putting his lighter back in the backpack, it ignited items within the bag, leading to the explosion of the butane canister. The reckless act has now resulted in multiple drug possession charges against him, marking a significant previous history of similar offenses.
