BOONVILLE, N.Y. — An explosion at a church in upstate New York left five individuals injured, including the pastor and several firefighters, on Tuesday morning. The blast rocked the Abundant Life Fellowship Church around 10:30 a.m., sending thick black smoke into the sky and prompting a swift response from local emergency services.
Initial reports indicate that the church was heated by propane cylinders. Local firefighters were called to investigate a reported gas odor in the building. While conducting their inspection, the furnace ignited, resulting in a violent explosion. According to preliminary findings, four individuals were in the church’s basement at the time, and a firefighter working on the first floor was forcefully thrown against a wall by the impact.
Among the injured are Pastor Brandon Pitts, 43, and four firefighters ranging in age from 43 to 71. All five have been hospitalized and are currently listed as critical but stable, authorities confirmed.
Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente offered praise for the emergency responders, stating, “Our thoughts are especially with the Boonville firefighters and church members who were injured. I commend the bravery and professionalism of our first responders who rushed toward danger to protect others.”
As investigators continue to look into the incident, police have indicated that there are no initial signs of foul play associated with the explosion. The church suffered extensive damage, leaving its structural integrity compromised, and the scene remained under investigation throughout the day.
Local residents expressed shock at the event, which disrupted the usually peaceful community. Efforts are underway to support those affected, with offers of assistance pouring in from nearby towns.
The investigation into the cause of the gas odor and subsequent explosion will be thorough, as authorities work to ensure such incidents are prevented in the future. Rescue teams are also monitoring the condition of the injured while the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event.
