Explosion Scare Forces Evacuation of Wyoming Capitol as Authorities Investigate Suspicious Device

Cheyenne, Wyoming — The capitol building in Cheyenne was evacuated Tuesday after authorities discovered what was described as a potential explosive device on the premises. The discovery prompted a coordinated response from law enforcement, which included the use of drones and bomb-sniffing dogs to ensure the safety of all individuals in the area.

Evacuations began around 9:30 a.m. and continued well into the afternoon. Among those ushered out were Governor Mark Gordon and members of the Wyoming Stable Token Commission, who were meeting in a basement room near the capitol when the incident unfolded.

Authorities revealed little about the nature of the suspicious item, except that it appeared to be homemade rather than a commercially manufactured explosive. Wyoming Highway Patrol spokesperson Aaron Brown confirmed that while the exact location of the item on the capitol grounds was not disclosed, public safety remained the top priority during the investigation.

“With any situation of this kind, our foremost concern is the safety of the public,” Brown stated. In addition to the evacuation, police cordoned off surrounding streets, while employees in adjacent state office buildings were instructed to shelter in place until the threat was fully assessed.

As the situation developed, officials maintained communication with the governor, who was actively monitoring the scenario and collaborating with law enforcement. The committee meeting, which included key state figures such as the state auditor and state treasurer, was interrupted, leading attendees to exit the building promptly.

By midday, those sheltering in the state office buildings were permitted to leave through designated exits as the area was deemed secure enough for controlled access.

The Wyoming capitol, which houses vital offices including those of the governor, secretary of state, and attorney general, has been a cornerstone of state business since its inception in 1890. After undergoing a significant renovation that concluded in 2019, the iconic building continues to serve as a hub of governance.

As local and state authorities work to uncover further details regarding the suspicious item, the focus remains squarely on ensuring the safety and security of all individuals in the vicinity.
