Jorf Lasfar, Morocco – A tragic explosion onboard the bulk carrier Toro Rosso led to the loss of seven crew members and multiple injuries. The Moroccan authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the incident involving the 91,384 DWT vessel, which was chartered by a company based in Ethiopia.
The explosion took place as the ship was approaching the Port of Jorf Lasfar to load phosphate fertilizers. On May 30, 2024, the port authorities were alerted to the blast and subsequent engine room fire. Located 8 nautical miles offshore, the rescue operations encountered significant obstacles in their efforts to assist the crew.
The Panama-registered bulk carrier, constructed in 1997, has changed hands several times since its original service with K-Line in the 1990s. Having undergone maintenance in 2022 and previously detained for safety concerns, the vessel had 28 crew members, predominantly from Syria. Three bodies were recovered from the ship, with twelve severely burned and injured individuals brought to shore by a pilot boat. Tugs and helicopters were deployed to support the rescue operations, resulting in the hospitalization of four crew members who later succumbed to their injuries.
