Explosion: Khmelnytskyi Apartment Blaze Leaves Residents in Crisis as Recovery Efforts Progress

Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine — Emergency crews have concluded their search-and-rescue operations following a devastating apartment building explosion on October 28, which is believed to be linked to a gas leak. The incident raised concerns about safety and led to a thorough inspection of neighboring structures to assess damage and ensure the welfare of residents displaced by the explosion.

Oleksandr Horin, the acting chief of the State Emergency Service for the region, reported ongoing dismantling of hazardous building fragments. Starting at 8 a.m., city officials set up a reception point to assist residents affected by the blast.

“Efforts are underway to safely remove unstable structures, and we are prepared to provide support to those impacted by this tragic event,” Horin stated.

The explosion struck around 3 p.m. on Ternopilska Street, causing destruction to a significant portion of the building. Initial reports indicate five individuals sustained injuries but received medical attention without requiring hospitalization. Local authorities confirmed that nearly 20 apartments experienced substantial damage, with additional assessments ongoing.

Concerns linger as officials fear someone may be trapped beneath the rubble, prompting extended rescue efforts. Preliminary estimates suggest that 32 people could need temporary housing as they recover from the incident. Although the explosion is primarily attributed to a potential gas leak, authorities are still exploring all possible explanations.

In light of the explosion, law enforcement has initiated a criminal investigation under Article 270 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which addresses violations of fire and industrial safety regulations.

Authorities are currently focused on gathering more information about the incident while ensuring that affected residents receive the support they need. Teams continue to monitor the structural integrity of the building and evaluate further safety measures for the community. The situation remains fluid as officials work to provide clarity amidst the ongoing investigation.
