Antioch, California – Three individuals were hospitalized with serious burn injuries Thursday night following an explosion involving an outdoor fire pit at a local residence. Fire officials reported the incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Silveria Way.
Crews from the Contra Costa Fire Protection District promptly responded to the scene. Fire Prevention Captain Joe Ottolini indicated that investigators are still working to determine the cause of the explosion, including whether the fire pit was fueled by wood or gas.
The three victims sustained severe second- and third-degree burns affecting their upper bodies and faces. One individual was airlifted to the Firefighters Burn Institute Regional Burn Center at UC Davis for specialized treatment. The other two were transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.
As of Friday afternoon, the conditions of the injured parties remained unclear. Meanwhile, a fourth individual present at the residence escaped without injuries.
