Explosion in Namyangju: Man Seriously Injured Using Butane Torch for Pest Control

Namyangju, South Korea — A gas explosion in a residential area left a man in his 60s injured after he attempted to eliminate mold and insects using a butane torch. Local fire authorities reported the incident occurred at a multifamily residence in Mukhyun-ri, a district of Hwado-eup, at approximately 12:19 p.m. on Sunday.

Firefighters arrived at the scene following reports from neighbors who heard the explosion. Upon entering the unit, they discovered the man with first- and second-degree burns across his body and shoulder. He was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Investigations by fire department officials suggest the explosion was triggered when the man sprayed an anti-mold agent on the walls of his boiler room. Afterward, he used the butane torch in an attempt to eradicate pests, inadvertently causing the incident. Fortunately, the explosion did not ignite a fire that could have resulted in further damage.

The local police and fire departments are currently working together to determine the precise cause of the explosion and assess the overall impact on the structure. As the investigation unfolds, authorities emphasize the importance of safety precautions when using flammable materials indoors.

This incident underscores the potential dangers associated with DIY pest control and the use of household chemicals. Residents are advised to exercise caution and seek professional help for pest control, especially when dealing with chemicals that can react explosively.

As the community rallies to support the injured man’s recovery, local officials remind residents to remain vigilant about safety practices in their homes, particularly when using combustible materials or during maintenance work.
