Explosion in Hayward Leaves Residents Reeling as Homes Show Severe Damage and Instability

HAYWARD, Calif. — A powerful explosion rocked a residential neighborhood, leaving nearby homes damaged and residents shaken as they began to assess the destruction one day later.

Witnesses reported that the blast not only impacted the home where it originated but also caused structural damage to surrounding residences. Cathy Rodriguez, who lives a few doors down from the explosion site, described alarming cracks that suddenly appeared in her home. “It was like something out of a movie. This line used to be sealed, and now you can see it opening,” she said, pointing to a significant fissure on her wall.

The incident prompted immediate evacuations of several nearby homes, which were rendered uninhabitable. Debra Omotoy, who was directly affected, recounted the moment of the explosion. “It was so powerful. My roof collapsed, and when I stepped outside, all I saw were blown-out windows and debris everywhere,” she said. Omotoy has since found refuge with family in Modesto.

Authorities confirmed that six individuals were hospitalized following the explosion, with three reported to be in serious but stable condition. The Alameda County Fire Department noted that their injuries ranged from respiratory issues to burns and fractures.

Among those injured were three employees of Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), the utility company that confirmed its workers were present in the vicinity at the time of the blast. The cause of the explosion is under investigation, as residents express their concerns about the integrity of their homes in the wake of the disaster.

Residents, still rattled by the event, are left questioning the safety of their living situations. Rodriguez explained her decision to relocate her family for safety reasons. “I don’t want to take any chances. What if there’s another explosion?” she said.

Despite the devastation, many in the community expressed gratitude that no fatalities occurred. “We’re just relieved that we’re all still here,” said one resident, reflecting a sense of resilience amid uncertainty.

As they begin to pick up the pieces, residents are eager to know what measures will be taken to ensure their safety, particularly as the gas supply is restored. With so many questions lingering, the community remains on edge as officials continue their investigations into the cause and future safety of the area.
