DODDABALLAPUR, India — A tragic incident during the Ganesh immersion festivities in Mutthur village has left the community in mourning. A twelve-year-old boy died and several others were injured following a firecracker explosion on Saturday, prompting swift action from local authorities to prohibit firecrackers in all public festivities throughout Bengaluru Rural district.
The explosion claimed the life of Tanush Rao, who was sitting near a bag of firecrackers being transported on a vehicle. According to police reports, the firecrackers detonated after coming into contact with heat from the vehicle’s silencer, causing a chaotic scene where rockets shot into the crowd. In total, five other individuals sustained injuries, including a police constable whose hand was severely damaged and required advanced treatment in Bengaluru.
Bengaluru Rural Superintendent of Police, CK Baba, indicated that the incident was a result of negligence, as the organizers had improperly placed fireworks next to heat sources. “The boy who was seated near the firecracker box suffered fatal injuries,” he stated, while the prosecution against the event organizers involves charges under sections dealing with culpable homicide and endangerment.
In response to the accident, Deputy Commissioner N Basavaraj ordered immediate measures to ban firecrackers in all public gatherings across the region. He expressed his shock at the tragedy, emphasizing the need for more stringent safety protocols during such celebrations. “Firecrackers will absolutely not be allowed in future immersion ceremonies,” Basavaraj affirmed, adding that the district administration will also cover medical expenses for the injured.
Witnesses described the horrifying moment as the firecrackers exploded shortly after the vehicle moved just a short distance from the procession site. The explosion created a frenzy, engulfing the area in flames and sending people scattering in fear.
In light of the incident, local officials are considering further guidelines to enhance safety during large public events, aiming to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
